Matias Domingos Damásio was born in Benguela (Angola) in May 9th 1982. Later on, he moved to Luanda where he learned to play guitar on the streets.
He entered in several talent shows, such as: “Estrelas do Palco” and “Domingão”. In 2003, he won “Gala Sexta Feira”, Luanda’s Song Contest and “Concurso Variante”. The 17th edition of “Chuva de Estrelas” song contest sponsored by TPA (Angola’s public television) acted as a trigger for Matias Damásio to enter the music industry. He recorded his first solo album, “Vitória” in 2005.
In 2008, he released his second album, “Amor e Festa na Lixeira”, a tribute to the neighbourhood he lived in until his teenage years in Benguela. This album was a huge hit, with sales above 20,000 copies and reached gold record status in 2009. On the same year, the artist released his first Live DVD, recorded in Cine Atlântico, Luanda, which sold more than 10,000 copies.
With two albums and a solid career, Matias Damásio has won several prizes and is one of Angola’s most awarded artists. The record releases came back in 2012, with “Por Angola” and “Por Amor” (2015).
The artist moved to Portugal in 2016, with the album “Por Amor” released by Sony Music Portugal. On this record, the singer/songwriter depicts, on the 12-track album, love stories, strength, hope, optimism and pride of his country and history.
This record became a bigger hit than expected, with the track “Loucos” standing out and becoming 2017’s biggest hit with more than 45 million views on YouTube. This single, a collaboration with fellow artist and HMB singer Héber Marques, reached double platinum status and the album, “Por Amor”, reached gold record status and registered more than 6 million plays on iTunes and Spotify.
The artist’s success in Portugal gave way to a tour in 2017 with more than 40 shows throughout the country. The most important ones were in Lisbon (Coliseu) in May and in Porto (Coliseu), both sold out. Matias Damásio is now one of Portugal’s biggest artists.
2018 is the year for Matias Damásio in Portugal. The artist stands out for writing the lyrics and music for singer Mariza’s single, “Quem Me Dera”.
In July, he signed a publishing agreement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing Spain.
In October 2018, “Augusta” will be released, an homage to the singer’s grandmother, on his mother side, but also to all the women of his life and of the world. This record includes collaborations with singers Aurea, Pérola and Claudia Leitte.
Matias Damásio will perform in Lisbon’s Altice Arena on November 24th, for one unique and unforgettable performance. Performing for the first time in Portugal’s biggest concert venue, the singer/songwriter will be singing his career’s biggest hits with several friends and guests. The show will last 2 hours and will tell the artist’s life and work, also including some new songs from the new album.
But there are more surprises: Matias Damásio is preparing a new stage set specially designed for this performance. Everything is now ready for the confirmation of one of Portugal’s and Portuguese speaking countries biggest romantic artists.
