Manuel Paulo Manso Felgueiras e Sousa is a Portuguese musician, producer, author and composer, born in Lisbon and with a career spanning over three decades.
He started his career in 1982, working with singer Jorge Palma on the album “Acto Contínuo”.
From 1983, Manuel Paulo joined Rui Veloso’s band, collaborating with the Portuguese singer until 1994.
He collaborated on the albums “Guardador de Margens,” “Rui Veloso,” “Rui Veloso ao vivo no Coliseu,”
“Mingos e os Samurais”, “Auto da Pimenta”, and more recently on “Acústico” as a guest artist.
As well as working with this band, he collaborated regularly with the TV show “Rua Sésamo” (the Portuguese version of Sesame Street), worked as a composer for Walt Disney’s children stories and for TV shows “Claxon” and “Lusitânia Expresso”.
In 1994, Paulo started a band with João Gil, João Monge, Moz Carrapa and Nuno Guerreiro, called “Ala dos Namorados”, recording and producing the albums “Ala dos Namorados,” “Por minha dama,” “Alma,” “Solta-se o Beijo,” “Cristal,” “Ao vivo no S. Luís” and “Mentiroso Normal”.
At the same time, Manuel Paulo worked as a producer on the album “Assobio da Cobra”, with lyrics by João Monge featuring Manuela Azevedo, Zeca Baleiro, Arto Lindsay, Vitorino, S. Godinho, Tim, Arnaldo Antunes, Camané, Rui Veloso, Manuel Cruz, etc.
He wrote and produced the album “Pássaro Cego”, with lyrics by J. Monge and vocals by Nancy Vieira.
He worked as music director on “Cabeças no ar,” music by J. Gil, Rui Veloso and Carlos Tê, lyrics by Carlos Tê and stage direction by Adriano Luz. Also worked on the theatre play “Assobio da Cobra,” working on the music, words by João Monge and Nuno Costa Santos, stage direction also by Adriano Luz.
He wrote the original soundtrack for the film “Ilhéu de Contenda”, directed by Leão Lopes, for which he won the award for Best Original Soundtrack on FESPACO (Festival panafricain du cinéma et de la télévision de Ouagadougou).
He wrote the original soundtrack for TV shows “Bocage” and “O dia do regicídio”, directed by Fernando Vendrell.
He produced albums for other artists, such as “tanto menos tanto mais” – Mísia, “Ana Sofia Varela,” “Tatuagens” – Mafada Veiga, “Òquestrada,” the album “A voz e a Guitarra”, and participated in other artists’s recordings, such as Xutos e Pontapés, Sérgio Godinho, UHF, Toranja. “Rio Grande,” “Cabeças no Ar”.
With words and lyrics by Carlos Tê, Manuel Paulo wrote the music for “Missa do Galo”, a musical play with stage direction by Luísa Pinto.
In 2013, he reunited ALA DOS NAMORADOS, recording “Razão de Ser” launched in March.
With words and lyrics by José Fialho Gouveia, he wrote the music for “Amarrada à tua mão”, a musical play.
In 2014, he wrote and produced “Felicidade” for Ala dos Namorados, with lyrics by João Monge, José Fialho Gouveia and Carlos Tê.
In April 2007, the album “Vintage” from Ala dos Namorados is released, in which Manuel Paulo worked as a composer and arranger.
In 2018, Manuel Paulo’s main project will be celebrating the band’s (Ala dos Namorados) 25th anniversary, writing original songs and creating the background shows for the concerts in Lisbon and Oporto, with several guests that worked with the band or were somehow connected with its music, as well as a concert with a symphonic orchestra to be held during the summer, with the Orquestra Clássica do Sul.
At the same time, Manuel Paulo finished writing some songs, with João Monge, for a staged musical/concerto, entitled “crú e outra coisa,” and is writing a series of children’s songs, also with João Monge. These projects are planned for 2019.
